Hello Turku, here we come!
March news! Happy to share the news that my In the Presence of Hope (Toivon äärellä) photography exhibition was invited to Turku’s Linnasmäki Gallery, where the exhibition will be on view from March 26 to May 20 2026. Hope you’ll have a chance to see it!
It feels wonderful that the photographs will be hanging on the walls again now – they definitely prefer that to being stored in a box. And I’m happy to visit Turku again, it’s a great city where I have family and friends, too. Two of my exhibitions ‘supermodels’ are from Turku, so it will be especially meaningful to celebrate the opening with them. Thank you especially Anna Kaisa Siltanen and Outi Lehtinen for making this again a reality in Turku.
Winter is slowly turning into spring, but the photographs in this exhibition bring to my mind all those magical summer evenings spent with the people I photographed, and the many beautiful places we visited together. Even though there’s no denying that our topics were heavy - matters of life and death tend to be - what struck me again and again was how much fun we had: life is still beautiful. And so is hope. There’s always light, and love, to overcome at least part of the shadows.
That’s what this exhibition wants to talk about and focus on: making the most of what we are given.

The photography exhibition In the Presence of Hope celebrates the privilege, uniqueness, and unpredictability of being alive through intimate portraits. In this project, Minna Pinola has interviewed and photographed twelve people living with incurable illness, who share their thoughts on what it means when illness enters life as an uninvited guest. Life holds both light and shadow, and it is lived today. Two of the people portrayed are from Turku.
“Life’s unpredictability touches us all. An incurable illness is always a shock, yet thousands of people live their everyday lives with illness. In the lives of those affected, worries about tomorrow, physical and emotional challenges, and the grief of letting go of things are joined by hope, love—and even joy. It has been an honor to step into the thoughts of those I photographed and to share these photographic journeys together,” says Minna Pinola.
Minna Pinola’s photography exhibition In the Presence of Hope will be on display at Linnasmäki Gallery in Turku (Lustokatu 7) from March 26 to May 20, 2026.
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 8:00–20:00, Sat–Sun 8:00–15:00.
Exception: The gallery will be closed during Week 18 (May 4–8, 2026).

Valokuvanäyttely Toivon äärellä (In the Presence of Hope) juhlistaa elämisen etuoikeutta, ainutlaatuisuutta ja arvaamattomuutta herkkien henkilökuvien kautta. Hankkeessa Minna Pinola on haastatellut ja valokuvannut 12 parantumattomasti sairasta, jotka jakavat ajatuksiaan siitä, kun sairaus astuu kutsumattomana vieraana osaksi elämää. Elämä on valoa ja varjoa, ja se on tänään.
Henkilökuvien näyttämönä toimii suomalainen luonto, liittäen kuvatut osaksi luonnon ja elämän kiertokulkua. Elämän käänteiden ja kriisien keskellä luonnon kauneus maadoittaa meitä ja laittaa meidät kontekstiin, osaksi jotain suurempaa.
Kohti toivoa ja empatiaa
Turussa Linnasmäen Galleriassa torstaina 26.3.2026 avautuvassa näyttelyssä vierailijoille avautuu moniulotteinen kohtaaminen kuvattavien sisäiseen maailmaan. Herkkiä valokuvia täydentävät kuvattujen haastattelujen pohjalta kirjoitetut tarinat. Kuvatut ovat jakaneet rohkeasti ajatuksiaan muun muassa arjen äkillisestä muuttumisesta ja muiden ihmisten kohtaamisen merkityksestä.
Valokuvaaja ei tuntenut kuvauskohteitaan etukäteen. Kuvatut ovat eri-ikäisiä, 10 – 60-vuotiaita suomalaisia. Kaksi kuvatuista on kotoisin Turusta.
”Elämän arvaamattomuus koskettaa meitä kaikkia. Parantumaton sairaus on aina järkytys, mutta tuhannet ihmiset elävät arkeaan sairauden kanssa. Sairastuneen elämässä huoli huomisesta, fyysiset ja henkiset haasteet, sekä suru asioista luopumisesta kutsuvat seurakseen toivoa ja rakkautta, iloakin. On ollut kunnia sukeltaa kuvattavieni ajatuksiin ja yhteisille kuvausretkille,” avaa Minna Pinola. “Pelon ja rauhaan jättämisen sijaan sairastuneet kertoivat kaipaavansa ympärillä olevilta ihmisiltä tavallista kohtaamista ja empatiaa. Sairauden läsnäolo voi tuoda elämään myös lämpimiä kohtaamisia ja kirkkautta, vaikkei se vaikeuksia poistakaan.“
Pohjois-Pohjanmaalta Raahesta kotoisin oleva, espoolaistunut Minna Pinola on valmistunut valokuvaajaksi Helsinki Design Schoolista ja toimii päivätyössään viestintäjohtajana teknologia-alalla. Toivon äärellä -näyttely on Pinolan ensimmäinen näyttelykokonaisuus, joka oli ensimmäistä kertaa esillä Helsingin keskustassa Laterna Magicassa.
